TWO PUGS IN A PRADA

The heads of Pugs were sculpted and carved of stoneware clay.

Press mold was used to make the bone lid for the teapot and for the woven fabric-like handbag exterior.

Construction sequence: First fired to cone 06. Underglazes applied to hand paint the Pug features and the turquoise fabric coloration. A matte gold glaze was used for the faux leather look on the pocket flaps and other detailing of the bag. Refired to cone 5. Opalescent copper and gold overglazes applied. Refired again to cone 017. Matte gold luster painted on the faux metal parts. Final firing to cone 018. Overglazes and cold finishes added to complete the work, including acrylics, enamel paints and colored pencil.

The art work represents one of a series of Puggetbooks, the first of which was the highly successful Pink Pearl Puggetbook.

This second work is a further development based on my interest in placing the Pugs in another style of handbag that would be an even greater challenge for me to create than the Chanel bag of the prior work.

I was intent, moreover, on depicting the Pugs emerging from the bag with airs of smug boredom, reflecting their snobbishly sophisticated views about yet another day out shopping. When will this indignity ever end? I used an elegant Prada bag as a model for reference. Hence the piece's name.
