SUNFLOWER PLATE (STUDY)

This piece represented the prototype for a series of plates with sunflower motifs. It was my first attempt to use the plate form more as a canvass than as a utiltarian object. It inspired a later work, Sunflower Plate II, which displayed the front of a sunflower on the top surface and its backview on the bottom surface.

Construction sequence: Initially fired to cone 06. Sunflower motif hand-painted with underglazes. Clear glaze applied to cover the design. Refired to cone 6.
