   SMALL SGRAFFITO VESSEL

Small sgraffito vessel is wheel thrown, designed with colored slip, which is scratched away to reveal underlying color.

  • This wheel thrown vessel was made of stoneware clay.
  • Black slip was subsequently applied to the greenware clay surface.
  • The design was then carved into the slip.
  • Sgraffito is the term for this technique in which the top layer of color is scratched (to scratch is sgraffiare in Italian) to reveal the color beneath.
  • Construction sequence: Fired to cone 06. Turquoise matte glaze is applied. Refired in a soda kiln to cone 9/10.
