SEASCAPE MURAL: A CERAMIC TILE WORK

Seascape Mural is made of a series of individually crafted tiles.

Six hand-built tiles of stoneware clay were assembled to form a wall-hung mural.
Each of the ceramic tiles for this work was designed to portray a different seascape image in bas relief with elaborate glazing , silk-screening and painting. Two tiles depict seahorses, two crabs, and two fish images.
Construction sequence:
- A series of 9" x 7" slabs of clay were photo silk-screened in the partially dried greenware state .
- Initially air-brushed in white and black underglazes to define area for seahorse, crab or fish.
- Doily photo silk-screened. Yellow spots and black outline of image added. More underglazing applied and underpattern scratched away. Air-brush glazing followed.
- First fired to cone 06. Glazes applied. Refired to cone 5/6. Overglazes and cold finish applied.
- Mounted in a wooden frame and grouted.
