PHILADELPHIA CREAM TEASE

Thishand-built stoneware teapot represents a further elaboration on the theme begun with the prototype Lox and Cream Teas.

It differs in a number of important ways from its predecessor, most notably the sleekly elongated body and spout and the more elaborately designed and decorated lid.

The Philadelphia Cream Cheese wrapper is silk-screened to form images which are placed on clay slabs. The slabs are used to construct the body and the spout. The bagels forming the base and handle are slip cast from bagel molds. The lox and cream cheese filler is sculpted.

Construction sequence:
- Initially fired to cone 06.
- Underglazes are applied.
- Fired again to cone 6.
- Overglazed.
- Final refiring to cone 018.

CREATIVE PROCESS

The images of a Philadelphia Cream Cheese wrapper is silk-screened for use as a surface decoration of several clay slabs.

Both the teapot body and its spout are formed by hand-building technique, using the decorated clay slabs.

The teapot's base is made in the form of a bagel created from slip cast molds of an actual bagel.

The teapot's handle, created in the form of another bagel, is added to one side of the body. Like the base, it is slip cast from the mold of a bagel.

The lid is made from a previously silk-screened clay slab by sculpting. It is fitted into a preformed opening at the top of the teapot's body.

An unfortunate event in preparation for the first firing resulted in damage to the base bagel. This became an opportunity for me to remodel the base in larger form to enhance the balance of the piece and provide more space to insert the modeled lox and cream cheese.

The lox was slip cast from an actual slice of lox, a difficult endeavor, to ensure that the fnely textured surface would be duplicated.
